Course Summary

This course is provided under licence from the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA). For more information on the GBCA see http://new.gbca.org.au/

Systems Thinking is a method to understand how things (elements and systems) are related, and how they influence one another within a whole. Applying it to building design allows us to see the big picture of how the building will perform in operation, when all of these various elements (site design, construction materials, appliances, PV and storage, use monitoring, etc) work together.

Understanding the complex relationships between elements of the building allows designers to develop sustainable and energy efficient buildings, that are comfortable and cost effective to live in.

This course covers the theory behind and tools to achieve this “Systems Thinking”, and case studies demonstrate successful energy efficiency design and delivery. The course includes:

  • Understand Systems Thinking
  • Understand some of the barriers
  • How to apply a systems approach
  • Becoming aware of new materials, building systems and technologies.
  • Case studies from Australia's most sustainable homes where systems thinking has worked well.

Our target audiences are:

  • Design, Building and Trade Professionals
  • Construction Site and Contract Coordinators
  • Regulatory Professionals, Surveyors and Certifiers

This module was developed by the Green Building Council of Australia as part of the Cross-Industry Skills Training Project - supported by funding from the COAG Energy Council National Energy Productivity Plan through a project managed by the Government of South Australia.
