National Construction Code Changes – Liveable Housing

Presenter: Simon Croft - HIA’s Chief Executive Director Industry Policy

This session delivered by Simon Croft, HIA’s Chief Executive Director Industry Policy and Lobbying will present an in-depth analysis of the upcoming changes which will take effect in Tasmania on 1 October 2024. Simon will discuss new liveable housing design provisions and provide a refresher on other NCC requirements.

Ban on Engineered Stone and update on other key WHS issues

Presenter: Ben Price – HIA’s Workplace Services Manager (Vic/Tas) & WorkSafe Tasmania representative

All state and territory Work, Health and Safety Ministers voted in support of a ban on the use of engineered stone and on some of the details associated with the ban. The topics to be covered include:

  • What is Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS)?
  • Information on how to work safely with products containing silica
  • Current rules for working with products containing silica
  • Tools available for working safely with silica
  • Health and air monitoring requirements
  • New Codes regarding Silica exposure
  • Workplace Exposure Standard
  • Training available
  • Ban on engineered stone, a timeline of the ban, and how transitional arrangements may work
  • Other current WHS issues such as asbestos, working from heights

The session will also include a presentation on mental health and an update from HIA staff on new CPD approved industry training on NCC, business and communication, and OHS topics.

Learning outcomes: At the end of this session attendees will understand the new livable housing requirements for Class 1A and Class 2 buildings under the NCC, know the date on which these requirements take effect, and understand how to comply with the liveable housing standard.

Understand and promote awareness of the risks associated with working with silica, be able to implement control measures, train staff, and monitor, better understand the ban on engineered stone and the critical dates/transitional arrangements for business compliance.

Know how and where to access additional resources and training, learn about other key WHS issues from WorkSafe Tasmania. Understand the importance of mental health in the workplace and be able to implement measures to help create a healthy workplace/space.
