Course Summary

This qualification reflects the role of builders, site managers and managers of small to medium sized building businesses who apply knowledge of structural principles, codes, standards, and legal requirements to Class 1 and 10, to a maximum of two storeys and Class 2 to 9 Type C constructions, and who plan and supervise safe building and construction work, prepare and administer contracts, and who apply quality principles to building and construction projects.

Building related to Construction and Site Management is about managing the factors around construction, such as the deployment of crews with specialised skills (including builders), product compliance, deployment of contract specialised skills, weather, and site location.

Occupational titles (depending on packaging options selected) may include:

  • Builder
  • Construction Supervisor
  • Site Manager
  • Site Supervisor
  • Leading Hand

This qualification is designed to enable the occupational outcome pathway:

Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) Packaging Rules, to achieve this qualification, the candidate must demonstrate competency in 19 units of competency:

  • 11 Core Units; and
  • 8 Elective Units

To achieve the occupational outcome of Builder, electives must include:

  • All Group A elective units.
  • The remaining units have been selected from Group B and General Electives

Back to Basics has prepared this qualification by clustering the units of competency that are required to award the qualifications. The Qualifications are prepared by clustering the units into 4 Modules:

  1. Construction
  2. Quantities, Estimating & Tendering
  3. Site Management
  4. Contract Administration

Module One – Construction - encompasses all facets of the construction process from Legislations and Regulations of each State and Territory, clearing the land and preparing the site all the way to the completion of the project. It includes multiple extracts from the National Construction Codes, Australian Standards and other relevant materials.

The Content of this module covers a comprehensive range of topics surrounding Construction Legislation; Regulations; Standards; Codes; Design Principles; Structural Principles and the Construction process from Site Preparation and all the facets relating to the construction of a Building Project.

Module Two – Quantities, Estimating and Tendering - encompasses all facets of qualifying each section of a project from reading the drawings to estimating the costs in preparing a full Bill of Quantities, evaluating the Contractor’s and Supplier’s Tenders to submitting a full extensive quotation to the Client. It includes simple exercises and details of how to set up and implement the Bill of Quantities.

The Content of this module covers a comprehensive range of topics surrounding Quantities, Estimating and Tendering on construction projects. It also includes a full section on the maths required to take off the measurements from drawings.

Module Three – Site Management - encompasses all facets of managing a construction project and implementing the management of a safe site.

The Content of this module covers a comprehensive range of topics surrounding the management of a construction site incorporating Safety and Risk Management.

Module Four – Contract Administration - encompasses all facets of qualifying each section of the project’s contract from the legal obligations of contracts to preparing a contract for the Client. It includes simple exercises and details of how to set up, administer and manage the contract procedures.

The Content of this Module covers a comprehensive range of topics surrounding Contract Administration procedures for a construction project.
