Work experience program launches to kickstart careers in construction

Tasmanian students and job seekers in the building and construction industry will have access to real-world work experience thanks to a new pre-employment program launched this week by Keystone Tasmania.

Chief Executive Officer Karin Mathison said the statewide initiative “Boots On”, developed and funded by Keystone, meets a commitment under the 2021 Building and Construction Industry Workforce Action plan, and responds to industry's demand for work-ready individuals across all Tasmanian construction sectors.

“The program will run for three weeks, beginning with five days of in-classroom learning with TasTAFE, where students will gain accreditation in three modules of Certificate II in Civil Construction,” Dr Mathison said.

“Industry experts have emphasised that hands-on experience is crucial for a successful career in building and construction, highlighting that certifications alone are insufficient.

“To address this gap, the program offers school students and adult job seekers the opportunity to engage in accredited training modules and real on-the-job work placements in various roles within the industry.”

The program, run with support from Beacon Foundation and Southcentral Workforce Network, engages businesses in every corner of the state, and of all sizes and sectors in the industry.

Boots On is also generously supported by Wicked Workwear, a local Tasmania-owned business that donated 30 pairs of FXD boots to the program, as well as offering a significant discount on all PPE (personal protective equipment) and workwear.

Prior to the course commencing, Peter Millington, owner of Wicked Workwear, visited New Norfolk School to fit the students for their PPE.

“While the program’s first iteration is limited to school students, later intakes will expand the scope to adults who want to move into the building industry,” Dr Mathison said.

As an incentive for employers, a $5,000 payment will be offered to any business that offers a Boots On participant an apprenticeship or traineeship within six months of successful program completion.

“Host businesses and supervising staff will also receive fully-funded training to equip them with the necessary skills to support participants,” said Dr Mathison.

“Keystone Tasmania is proud to spearhead this initiative, which will impact the lives of numerous young people, job seekers, and individuals seeking a career change.”
