Course Summary

This Optical Fibre Endorsement Course (OF) is a competency-based course that will allow a technician to apply for the Optical Fibre (OF) endorsement on their Open Registration Card. This course includes the unit of competency ICTCBL322 Install, test and terminate optical fibre cable on customer premises. This course also suits Security Technicians who install Optical Fibre cable as part of a network for IP CCTV.

Fundamentals of optical fibre transmission

The course covers the following:

  • Fundamentals of optical fibre transmission
  • Testing for both single mode and multi-mode fibre
  • Correct and safe installation practices
  • Testing to the industry standard, AS/NZS 3080:2013
  • Correct fibre handling techniques and installation methods
  • Fundamentals of Light Source and Power Meter and ODTR testing

The course includes the following practical exercises:

  • Mechanical Direct termination (connectorisation) of fibre
  • Pigtail fusion splicing
  • Mechanical splicing
  • Use of Light Source and Power Meter, the interpretation of results and fault finding

Assessments include

  • Theory Assessments
  • Practical Assessments

Outcome
Upon successful completion of this unit, students will receive a Statement of Attainment for ICTCBL322 install, test and terminate optical fibre cable on customer premises. 
Students who successfully complete this unit are eligible to apply for their endorsement with one of the five registrars.
