This qualification is for drafters who wish to learn how to apply their skills to diverse building design projects.

The course units allows students to further develop their drafting expertise and design capabilities to design, draft and document plans, specifications and documentation for buildings of all classifications, as defined in the NCC, to a maximum floor area of 2,000 m2, excluding those of Type A construction.

Knowledge that underpins this work is also included in the qualification including developing the ability to analyse and synthesise information from a range of sources to generate design solutions. Graduates from this qualification can work without supervision, following gaining of licence to practice, and may specialise in residential, commercial, public or industrial projects including new buildings and renovations.

The qualification attracts a range of different groups of students. Generally students will be building designers or draftspersons with more than two years of industry experience who fall into the following groups:

• Students with no formal qualifications or qualifications that are not in the list of pre requisites, or
• Students with international qualifications not recognised in Australia, or
• Students that require a formal qualification for licencing requirements, or
• Students that have completed a qualification in the pre requisites list and wish to continue studying.
