Course Summary

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to operate, load, haul and dump materials using an articulated haul truck.

This unit applies to those who work in operational roles.

This unit applies to both front and rear dumping haul trucks.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and industry sectors, and must be sourced form state jurisdictions prior to applying this unit.

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit.

The candidate must demonstrate completion of articulated haul truck operations that safely, effectively and efficiently follows workplace procedures to carry out work activity on at least two occasions, and include but not limited to:

  • conducting prestart and start-up checks prior to commencing operations
  • driving and manoeuvring articulated haul vehicle, and adjusting techniques to suit work conditions
  • operating articulated haul vehicle within equipment operating capacities
  • positioning the articulated haul vehicle for loading of materials under at least one of the following types of loading equipment:
  • hauling materials to designated location/s i.e. Tip Head, Crusher pocket, Waste Dump
  • positioning the articulated haul vehicle for dumping of materials
  • unloading materials in designated location and limiting spillage
  • conducting articulated haul vehicle shutdown and refuelling identifying issues with vehicle equipment and makes minor adjustments

In the course of the above work the candidate must also:

  • locate and apply relevant documentation, policies and procedures
  • select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities
  • apply safe work practices and identify and report potential hazards and environmental issues, and assess risks
  • monitor and manage equipment performance using indicators and alarms
  • identify common equipment faults
  • inspect and prepare work area
  • enter and exit the vehicle using three point touch technique
  • use a range of communications techniques and equipment essential to the safe completion of work instruction, to convey information to others
  • coordinate activities with others
  • meet written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures associated with articulated haul truck operations
