Course Summary

Vehicle Operation – heavy vehicle pilot licence

This course consists of units of competency in the Transport and Logistics Training Package; it is delivered in a classroom environment, encouraging interaction and knowledge sharing between participants, with practical application of skills in a simulated work environment.

Course content

  • Legislation, regulations and codes of practice
  • Hazard and risk assessment and minimisation
  • Workplace policies, procedures and industry best practice
  • Dangerous goods, hazardous substances, warning systems, controls and indicators
  • Operating procedures for controlling traffic during piloting duties
  • Evaluating breakdown and emergency situations and implementing control procedures
  • Identifying inconsistencies with optimum performance
  • Undertaking pre-and post-operational checks and relevant document completion
  • Height, width and mass limitations of bridges, tunnels and other structures
  • Required vehicle positioning, traffic warnings and directional signalling procedures
  • Communication and documentation requirements
  • Typical problems that may arise with technology Learning outcomes

On completion of the course participants should be able to:

  • Apply relevant regulations, legislation and workplace procedures
  • Assess relevant risks and hazards
  • Reporting and documentation requirements
  • Efficiently and safely pilot oversized and overmassed loads
