The Vocational Trainer Preparation Program (VTPP) participants have started free training that will assist them to effectively pass on their knowledge, skills and wisdom to the next generation in their industry.
TasTAFE developed the course to provide a more introductory approach and sustainable pathway to becoming a qualified trainer and assessor.
Through engaging in the program, participants will gain foundational skills relevant to modern training in the workplace as well as providing an insight into teaching in the VET sector. In particular, the course will put participants in good stead when considering continuation onto the industry standard Certificate IV in Training and Assessment qualification.
While the 12 course participants signed up to build upon their training skills, they’re all hoping to get different things out of the experience.
Simon signed up for the course to give himself a leg up before beginning further study. As a Welder Trainer at Incat, Simon trains first year apprentices and is hoping to complete his Certificate IV in Training and Assessment soon. After expressing his interest, he said getting started in the course was a breeze.
“My manager let me know about the course, not much later I was in a Zoom meeting about it and here I am. I’m hoping it will help me with my computer and presentation skills”.
Meanwhile Jason, after 25 years across construction, steel, welding and rigging, is hoping this course will be the first step in his journey to becoming a TasTAFE teacher. Jason spoke to a friend about his desire to teach at TasTAFE, and was recommended the VTPP as a starting point.
“I think being a teacher would be a good fit for me. I want to help apprentices. I think the role I’m looking for is teaching High Risk Work License and in the quieter times, go into the classrooms and teach there.”
The VTPP is available to anyone working in civil construction, electrotechnology, automotive, plumbing or advanced manufacturing (and related sectors). Throughout the course, participants will develop digital skills for use in vocational training as well as basic presentation skills and providing work skill instruction. The next intake commences in late August 2023 with Expressions of Interest currently open.
There will also be a fully funded Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116) for the same eligible industry personnel, commencing on July 25th, 2023. This program is known as the Developing Industry Trainers Program and funded places are limited to 20 across the State.
